2023-01-12 Thu

Gaurishankar Dalmia was honoured with a stamp by the Department of Posts in recognition of all the charitable work he accomplished throughout his life. He was born on November 12th, 1910, in the Bihar village of Lakshisaray, in the Munger district. He received his education in Kolkata, and after his father passed away when he was 17 years old, he took over the charge of the family business.

He left his family's business and moved to the village of Jasidih in Santhal Pargana in response to Mahatma Gandhi's request. He actively participated in the war for liberation, and in 1926, after being inspired by Gandhi once more, he entered public life and vowed to only wear the Khadi. He was jailed in 1931 as a result of his involvement in the Salt Satyagraha campaign. He served as the first General Secretary of the Santhal Paharia Seva Mandal, Deoghar, and was chosen as the president of the Santhal Pragana District Congress Committee in 1936.

He also had a strong passion for journalism. He published a weekly magazine called "Prakash" in Hindi and "The Spark" in English for almost twenty years. He has released several works in the Santhali language and Nagri Script since 1950. He worked to get the Santhali language, which the government officially recognized, to embrace the Nagri Script.
