Department of Posts released a series called "Eminent writers" featuring Bhisham Sahni as one of the most prolific writers of his time in Hindi Literature. He was born on 8 August 1915 in Rawalpindi, his immense popularity was a reward for his literary merits. He is known as a progressive writer, influenced by Marxism, and yet does not seem to be engrossed with political themes and was awarded Padma Bhushan in literature in 1998.

One of the key elements in the construction of a country is literature. It serves as a culturally unifying factor and a moving tool for raising spirits during difficult times.

He travelled across the towns of Punjab with the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) in 1948 while in good spirits and with a passion for the lives of ordinary people. He subsequently spent the next 7 years working as a Hindi translator in the USSR. His writings and novels were influenced by his exposure to everyday life and the problems of the common people.

"Aaj ke Ateet," an autobiography by Bhisham Sahni, was her most recent book to be published (the Pasts of the Present). Between 1975 and 1985, he served as general secretary of the All India Progressive Writers Association, acting general secretary of the Afro-Asian Writers Association, and a contributor to their journal "Lotus."
