The official language of the Republic of Guinea is French. One-third of the population speak Pulaar language. The second most spoken language is the Mandinka language and Susu language is on a third. Guinea is a west coastal country in Africa. The country was ruled by series of African autocrat empires until France colonized it in the 1890s. Later, it achieved independence in 1958. Majority of the people practise Islam and 8-10 per cent follow Christian along with 7 percent adhering to indigenous religious beliefs. It has a rich musical tradition. Bembeya Jazz band became popular in the 1960s after Guinean independence. It cuisines vary from region to region. Rice is the most common staple food.
