On 10 December 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 4 states, “No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.”

Slavery or enslavement is illegal around the globe and considered a crime. But it is also true that slavery was real once and was part of human civilization. Abolition of slavery is also known as Abolitionism or the abolitionist movement.

The traces of slavery practices are found in Sumer, ancient Egypt, ancient China, Akkadian Empire, Assyria, Babylonia, Persia, ancient Greece, ancient India, etc.

Brazil was the last country in America to abolish slavery in 1888. This was called the ‘Golden Law’. The United Nations General Assembly declared 2004 the International Year to Commemorate the Struggle against Slavery and its Abolition.
