The ngultrum is the currency of the Kingdom of Bhutan. It can be literally translated as 'silver' for ngul and 'coin' for trum.

In June 1974 Nu.1, Nu.5, and Nu.10 notes were introduced by the Royal Government of Bhutan, followed by Nu.2, Nu.20, Nu.50, and Nu.100 in 1978. In 2006, the Monetary Authority introduced its latest series of notes including this 1000 Bhutanese banknote.

Front and back printing are predominantly yellow, red, and gold. The front of the banknote depicts the Dharma Wheel (Khorlo), one of the eight auspicious symbols surrounded by two dragons in the center with a Dakini descending from heaven to offer the Raven Crown to the King at top left corner.

Gold embossed national emblem seal at lower right corner. Fierce head of swooping male dragons at the bottom left and top right corners. On the right, is a profile portrait of 5th King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck wearing a raven crown.

The reverse depicts Tashichho Dzong a Buddhist monastery and fortress that has been the seat of the government since 1952 and presently houses the throne room and offices of the king.
