The Kina is the currency of Papua New Guinea. The name Kina is derived from Kuanua language of the Tolai region, referring to a callable pearl shell used widely for trading in both the Coastal and Highlands areas of the country.
The kina was introduced on 19 May 1975 and circulated along with the Australian dollar until 31 December 1975. Notes were introduced with the denominations of 2, 5 and 10 kina. A new series began in the year 1999 with the addition of 10 kina in 2008.
The obverse of the 10 Kina banknote depicts National Crest which is a stylized Bird of Paradise sitting on a Kundu (drum) and a spear, symbolizing National Unity. The National Parliament Building with background tints consist of lineal patterns incorporating various items of interest from different areas of Papua New Guinea.
The reverse of the banknote depicts a head of a boar along with a toea arm band from Central Province, a Crowrie shell necklace from Madang area and shell ornament peculiar to the Western Province.
