Arethusa was the daughter of Nereus and Doris. According to Greek mythology, Arethusa was a singularly beautiful nymph; who gave her name to spring in Elis and to another on the island of Ortygia, near Syracuse. She was also a favorite of the goddess Daina, goddess of hunting and knowledge. She was so beautiful that all men who set eyes upon her ended up desiring her.

The bank of Greece issued this banknote that depicts the goddess Arethusa in 1964. These notes were withdrawn from circulation in 1977.

The obverse side of this note depicts the bust of the goddess Arethusa facing towards the right. The reverse side of this note depicts, an ancient galley and shipyards.
