2022-05-04 Wed
Indian Post has issued a sheetlet on the Platinium jubilee of the National Physical Laboratory. National Physical Laboratory is situated in New Delhi. It is the measurement standards laboratory of India. It calibrates the national standards of weights and measures. It was one of the earliest national laboratories formed under the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research. Our first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone of NPL on 4 January 1947. The main objective of the laboratory is to build up physics-based research and development for the overall development of science and technology in the country.
During the Harappan age, we find excellent examples of town planning and architecture. Later, during Chandragupta Maurya’s period, there was a well-defined system of weights and measures. In Mughal times, Guz was the measure of the length and which is still popular. British put efforts to achieve uniformity in weights and measures. After independence, there was a need to establish a modern measurement system in the country.
