Rwanda's 5000 Francs

2022-05-03 Tue

The franc is the official currency in Rwanda since 1960. The franc became the currency of Rwanda in 1916 when Belgium occupied the previously German colony and the Belgian Congo franc replaced the German East African rupie.

Rwanda used the currency of the Belgian Congo until 1960 when the Rwanda and Burundi franc was introduced. Rwanda began issuing its own francs in 1964, two years after gaining independence.

The 5,000 francs notes were introduced in 1978. The above shown 500 franc note was issued as a part of the 2014 series, and its color is lilac. The front design features a mountain gorilla which is found in the Virunga volcanic mountains.

The reverse note side illustrates Rwandan basket weavings. The lettering on this side of the note is in the English language. The lettering of this side of the note is in the Kinyarwanda language.
