2022-03-29 Tue
The IBNS 'Bank Note of the Year is awarded to a banknote issued during the preceding year and it is judged on artistic merit, design, and security features. The winning entry of 2008, for notes issued during 2007, is Samoa’s 20 Tala note. With striking, eye-catching yellow and gold colors and bold and innovative security devices, the 20-tala note became the showstopper of the competition. The banknote gives an emphasis on tourism which was the most laudable advantage of the banknote.
In addition, the banknote highlights one of the nation’s picturesque waterfalls which acted as a surprising change in the standard practice of portraying famous persons on paper money. The reverse design was also praised for featuring Samoa’s national bird, the Manumea, and the national flower, the Teuila; the two symbolizing the uniqueness of Samoa’s natural environment.
