Gastronomic Heritage on Lithuania stamps

A special stamp for philatelic series is issued by Lithuania Post under the name ‘Gastronomic heritage’. The stamp was designed by U.Zilyte. It depicts a cold pink soup- a traditional soup made out of beet or ‘saltbarsciai’ has been a favourite dish in Lithuanian kitchen for hundreds of years.

Fresh beet are cut and boiled after cooling beetroot soup is added with milk, kefir, cucumber, hardboiled egg, seasoned a with dill, onion leaves and parsley. The soup is eaten with boiled potatoes. According to post-this garishly pink soup is a incredibly popular particularly in summer.

People in Lithuanians have their own favourite ways to eat saltibarsciai with eggs, some with boiled potatoes and even add a little bit of source cream.
