First Special Delivery Stamp of Canada

2020-01-09 Thu

Special Delivery stamps were pre-payments added to the regular “lawful postage” for extra service – immediate delivery of a letter within one mile of any special delivery post office. These special post offices were those with free routine delivery service or in larger communities with 4,000 or more people. First available in 1885, the Special Delivery service was extremely popular.

Special Delivery Canada stamps first appeared at the end of June 1898 and the new special delivery service was inaugurated on July 1, 1898. The first special delivery stamp of Canada came with the denomination of 10 Cents.

The stamp came in Blue-Green colour and was inscribed with word ‘TEN’ in the centre with the double border around which reads ‘SPECIAL DELIVERY WITHIN CITY LIMITS’. The number 10 is inscribed on the right and left of the central inscription. The name of the country appears at the top and the ‘denomination value in letters’ appears at the bottom.
