Umberto-I was the King of Italy reigning from 1878 until his assassination on 29th July 1900. Umberto ascended the throne on Jan. 9, 1878 on the death of his father. He adopted the title "Umberto I of Italy" rather than "Umberto IV" of Savoy.
Umberto's reign saw Italy attempt colonial expansion into the Horn of Africa, successfully gaining Eritrea and Somalia despite being defeated by Abyssinia at the Battle of Adwa in 1896. In 1882, he approved the Triple Alliance with the German Empire and Austria-Hungary.
He supported nationalistic and imperialistic policies that led to disaster for Italy and helped create the atmosphere in which he was assassinated. The above shown gold 100 Lire was issued from Rome mint. The obverse side of the coin features the bust of Umberto I. The reverse side of the coin displays the Italian Coat of Arms, surrounded by a wreath.
