Panchala was one of the Janapada during the ancient period in India. Today it is located in the Ganges-Yamuna Doab of the upper Gangetic plain. It was one of the most powerful states in the Indian subcontinent during the ancient period in India; this kingdom was closely allied with the Kuru Kingdom. The word Panchala is well known from the great Indian epic Mahabharata. The name of the Panchala janapada suggests that it was a fusion of five (Pancha) Janas (tribes). The Indian epic like Mahabharata and Puranas had mentioned about northern Panchala as an offshoot of the Bharata clan.
