Justin II proclaims Tiberius as Caesar

2019-12-07 Sat

Justin II was Eastern Roman Emperor reigning from 565 to 574. His reign was marked by war with the Sassanid Empire and the loss of the greater part of Italy. He became emperor in November 565 following his uncle’s death. He began his reign on a note of resolution and common sense; he paid state debts, remitted overdue taxes, and reduced expenditures.

Today on 7 December 574, Justin, in one of his more lucid moments, had Tiberius proclaimed Caesar and adopted him as his own son. Tiberius added the name Constantine to his own. Although his position was now official, he was still subordinate to Justin. Sophia was determined to remain in power and kept Tiberius tightly controlled until Justin died, in 578.

The above shown Follis was issued under his reign from Antioch mint. The obverse of a coin depicts the Justin and Sophie enthroned, each holding a scepter, globe surmounted by a cross between them. The Large M, cross above, date and official marks.
