Royal Mint Commemorates the Centenary of the Remembrance Day
2019-11-13 Wed
The United Nations commemorated the 100 years of Remembrance Day on 11th November 2019. A new £5 coin has been released by the Royal Mint to commemorate the history of Remembrance Day.Each year, the UK remembers the members of the armed forces who died in World War I, and from then on all that has passed while in the line of duty. The Ode of Remembrance, which incorporates Laurence Binyon's poem ‘For the Fallen’, has become an important part of most Remembrance ceremonies. Binyon's poem was first published in The Times in 1914, not long after the start of the war.
For the Remembrance Day 2019 coin, artist Harry Brockway has drawn inspiration from this ode and designed a very beautiful coin that was released by the Royal Mint. The coin has the date World War I official ended, 1919, and this year’s date, 2019, on it. The coin also has a colorful poppy on it, with the quote We Will Remember Them embossed around it.
