Mughal Mint Peshawar

Peshawar was established during 5th-6th Century BC within the cultural sphere of eastern ancient Persia. The meaning of the word Peshawar is ‘frontier town’; today it is a city situated in Pakistan. It is one of the most ancient cities of Pakistan. The region around Peshawar was known as Gandhara in Sanskrit.

Peshawar came under the control of the Mughal Empire during the 16th Century. Peshawar was a great historic center of transit-caravan trade with Afghanistan and Central Asia. Today Peshawar is connected by highway and rail with Lahore, Rawalpindi, Hyderabad, and Karachi.

This silver rupee issued by Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah from the mint Peshawar weighs around 11.37g. This silver rupee was issued during the Hijri Year 1145 in the 14th year of his reign. The obverse of this coin is inscribed with the name and title of the king. The reverse of this coin is inscribed with the Julus formula and mint name.
