Rare China’s 1989 Dragon and Phoenix Coins Auctioned

Most of the 1989 Dragon and Phoenix silver and gold coins were melted during the protests of Tiananmen Square in China making them extremely rare. The production of 2,538 gold and 7,328 silver coins were withdrawn and melted.Swiss International Coin Auctions, Sincona Ag offered two of these coins on 25th October for sale. The Proof 1989 Dragon and Phoenix 2-ounce gold 200-yuan coin were sold for $106,627 with additional buyer’s fee. A 1989 Dragon and Phoenix 2-ounce silver coin were sold for $55,329 20.
Some of these coins were privately on behalf of the Shenyang Mint, which were not obtainable once the protests gained momentum. The date 1990 was used on the dies and the coins were struck with the then decided mintage limit.
