Two dies were used to mint a Henry VI silver penny, without any intention to be paired. The coin belonging to the Lord Stewartby collection is being offered at a Spink auction on 29th November in London with an estimated value of £80 to £100. The collection also contains coins issued by Edward III to Richard III from the 14th to 16th centuries. Banker Lord Stewartby was a member Parliament and held important positions in the government from 1974 to 1992. The collection was used to basically study die varieties and mints.

The silver coin offered at the auction is a “mule” from the London and Calais mints. The Calais Mint issued coins six months before the death of Henry V. It first started minting gold coins and at an unknown point in time started issuing silver coins. The coin features the obverse design featuring the bust of Henry V and a standard Henry VI initial cross along with a Calais penny reverse.
