Ahmednagar Sultan Gold Hon (pagoda) Sold for 1, 75,000

This gold Hon was struck by the Murtaza Nizam Shah I (973-997; AD 1565-1588) in the year 933.Murtaza was the sultan of Ahmednagar. He was the son of Hussain Nizam Shah I, who succeeded after his father’s death in the year 1565. He was the first Nizam ruler who had issued the coin in his own name. The coins issued by him in his own name are known from the date 989 to 996.
This gold hon was struck to light weight standard, the weight of the coin being 2.9gm. The obverse of the coin reads as “la ilaha illallah muhammadu rasool Allah Ali Wali-Allah’. ‘Ali Wali-Allah’ was added to Muhammad Rasool Allah’. The reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Sultan Murtaza’ on the top and the date 933(in words) at the bottom.
This Gold Hon was sold for INR 1, 75,000 at Classical Numismatic Gallery in Auction held on 21st December 2013.
