2016-10-14 Fri
“Whoever wants to know something about me – as an artist which alone is significant- they should look attentively at my pictures and there seek to recognize what I am and what I want” – Gustav KlimtGustav Klimt was a famous Austrian symbolist painter. He is known for portraying beautiful women in various different themes.
The Austrian Mint issued Klimt’s five gold coin (2012- 2016) series of miniature masterpieces celebrating the Viennese master’s unique vision of women. Adele Bloch-Bauer, Expectation, Judith II, Medicine and The kiss- these five paintings of Klimt’s have turned into gold coins!
One of his famous good romance paintings is ‘The Kiss’. It is believed that the painting depicts Gustav and his favorite women Emilie Floge.
The obverse of the coin was designed by Thomas Pesendorfer. It bears the portrait of standing Klimt with his hands crossed and Emilie Floge in the centre. ‘REPUBLIK’ is on the left side while ‘OSTERREICH’ is on the top with denomination 50 Euro at the bottom and the year of issue 2016 inside a painting frame of Emilie.
The reverse of the coin depicts The Kiss paintings replica. The coin relief is very beautiful and all the prominent features are clearly seen. On the lower side is the letter ‘T’, which stands for the last letter of his surname Klimt. The preceding four coins bear the ‘KLIM’ each letter on them and thus the last one completes his full series with the artist surname.
Turning Klimt’s famous five paintings into coin was a very good decision of Austrian mint. Because we all cannot own his original paintings, but may afford these coins! To book your coin you can visit the Austrian Mint site here.
