Chad, officially the Republic of Chad, is a landlocked country in north-central Africa. It is bordered by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon and Nigeria to the southwest, and Niger to the west.

The United Nations' Human Development Index ranks Chad as the seventh poorest country in the world, with 80% of the population living below the poverty line. Over 80% of Chad's population relies on subsistence farming and livestock raising for its livelihood. Since 2003, crude oil has become the country's primary source of export earnings, superseding the traditional cotton industry.

Chad's currency is the CFA franc. The CFA franc was introduced to the French colonies in Equatorial Africa in 1945, replacing the French Equatorial African franc. Today we are looking at a 5000 Francs banknote of 1984-1991.

The obverse of the note has the map of the Central African States with oil rig workers in hardhats with a drill and a flare stack, oil tanker, oil towers, and oil derricks. The reverse has African women and men carrying cotton in baskets and cloth bundles and straw huts.
