Postage Stamp Commemorates 450 years of Rosario Cathedral

To commemorate the 450th anniversary of Holy Rosario Cathedral in Mangaluru, India Post released a special 5 rupees postage stamp. Important political leaders, the Bishop of Mangaluru and other officers from the postal department were present at the celebratory event that was held near the church on 18th November. A first Day cover, dated 18th November 2018, with a special circular cancellation featuring the "Rosary year" Emblem was also released. The cover shows a beautiful photograph of the Holy Rosary Cathedral. The FDC can be purchased for Rs 20 from the Head Post Office in Pandeshwar.Rosario Cathedral was the first Catholic Church in undivided Dakshina Kannada, dedicated to Our Lady of Rosary by the Portuguese in 1568 near the South West corner of the Mangaladevi temple. The current structure of the cathedral was built in 1915. A church was built in the same location after the British established its trading centre from 1800 AD. The institution has been serving the society in religious and educational fields for several years now. The district in-charge Minister of Dakshina Kannada, U.T. Khader gave out funds raised by the Rosario Cathedral to 10 families for title deeds.
