Silver Rupee of Gulab Singh

Gulab Singh was the founder of royal Dogra Dynasty and first Maharaja of the Kashmir Princely State. The Dogra state was ruled for a century. This period is marked as the most peaceful and progressive times in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. Gulab Singh was an important noble of Maharaja Ranjit Singh at Lahore. After the Sikh Empire collapsed, Gulab Singh established Dogra princely states in Jammu and Kashmir, the second largest princely state in British India.During the reign, Gulab Singh issued many coins in copper and silver from Srinagar mint. The denominations are known as Rupee, Kham Rupee, and Paisa.
Above shown silver Rupee is issued in the reign of Gulab Singh. The obverse of a coin depicts the Persian legend while the reverse of a coin bears Leaf and VS Date, with initials JHS.
