India Post to Honour Sarangi Maestro Ustad Sabri Khan

1st December was observed as the 3rd Death anniversary of Sarangi Maestro, Ustad Sabri Khan. India Post is going to release a 5 Rupees Commemorative Postage Stamp featuring the legendary musician on 11th December. The launch ceremony will take place in New Delhi and will be attended by important delegates from the Government of India.

Sabri Khan belonged to the famous Sainia Gharana, from where the noted 16th Century singer, Tansen, also got trained. Born in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh in 1927, the Ustad learned the basics of music from his grandfather, Haji Mohammed Khan. He later trained rigorously under his own father, Ustad Chhajju Khan, to become a distinguished Sarangi player.

Ustad Sabri Khan was responsible for making Sarangi popular across the world. He was invited to play on the eve of Independence Day in Parliament House. He also played for an ill Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, as a part of Music Therapy. The recipient of Padma Bhushan played at sangeet Sammelans all over India and also performed with veteran musician and violinist, Yehudi Menuhin. The Ustad’s son, Kamal Sabri was delighted to receive the news and expressed his gratitude towards the officials.
