88th Anniversary of the Dandi March!

Dandi March, Salt March or the Salt Satyagraha was an act of nonviolence to protest against the Salt tax imposed by the British government on the Indians. This 24-day march began on 12th March 1930 as a direct action campaign of tax resistance and nonviolent protest against the British salt monopoly and gave impetus to the Indian independence movement.Mahatma Gandhi led the famous Dandi March from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad to Dandi a coastal village in Gujarat (390 km) and started the nationwide Civil Disobedience Movement. 79 Marchers accompanied Gandhi on his march. Most of them were between the ages of 20 and 30. These men hailed from almost all parts of the country. The march gathered more people as it gained momentum.
On 12th March 2005 the act that kick-started a nationwide movement spreading throughout India and marked for the first time, the participation of women in the struggle for freedom completed 75 years!
To commemorate this event Proof Set and UNC (Uncirculated coin) Set was released of INR 100 and INR 5 by the India Government Mint Mumbai. The reverse of this coin shows the portrait of "Mahatma Gandhi marching with his followers" with an inscription "Dandi Yatra Ke 75 Varsha" in Hindi on the left upper periphery and "75 YEARS OF DANDI MARCH" in English on the right upper periphery. ‘1930-2005’ – the span of 75 years, is shown below the central design.
