Germany Occupied Belgium Stamp
2018-07-10 Tue
Belgium was occupied by the Germans throughout World War One. The Germans captured Liege on August 16, 1918, and on August 20 Brussels was surrendered. The country was placed under a German governor and deprived of all legal rights and protection. The Germans slowly controlled everything, including the postal system. However, instead of issuing new stamps they overprinted the existing stamps.
One such stamp is Belgium’s One Franc stamp. This brown coloured stamp was probably issued in the early years of the World War I. The stamp depicts a fleet of ships in vignette surrounded by the beautifully intricate design of vines and anchors. The stamp id overprinted by “EUPEN & MALMEDY 1 MK 25”.
The stamp was in use till the end of the war.
