Nocturnal Animal Platypus Featured on Special Coins from Downies
2018-07-03 Tue
Australia is known for its exotic wildlife. Downies has released a special glow-in-the-dark coin for Niue Islands featuring duck-billed Platypuses. It is the first coin from Australia at Night “Black Proof” series. These amazing nocturnal creatures are only found in Australia. They create burrows near freshwater rivers and lakes for shelter. The platypus is sacred as per Australian tradition and is one of the few animals that it is considered taboo to hunt or eat.
The .999 fine silver 1-ounce coins from the series use a proprietary black treatment to recreate the nocturnal world. The platypus seems to be swimming through its riverine habitat at night. Some experts believe that the black treatment may be rhodium plating but the fact is not confirmed by Perth Mint. The 31.13 grams coin has a diameter of 38.6 millimeters in diameter and a mintage limit of 1,000 pieces. It can be purchased for $99.95 each.
