Magnificent Pegasus Featured on Gold Bullion Coin from British Virgin Islands
2018-06-25 Mon
Pobjoy Mint released a new 1oz Fine 999.9 Gold Bullion coin featuring the mythical horse Pegasus, galloping and spreading its wings. The obverse features a Pobjoy Mint exclusive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.The popular white horse from Greek Mythology is known to be a good-hearted and gentle animal. It always symbolised divine inspiration or the journey to heaven, which is why Zeus made him immortal by turning him into a constellation on the day of his death.
Perseus is sent to kill one of the three Gorgons – Medusa, who had poisonous snakes instead of hair. Those who looked at Medusa would turn to stone. The God Hermes and the Goddess Athena gave Perseus a shield. Perseus used the shield as a mirror to look at Medusa indirectly. Pegasus was born from the blood of Medusa when Perseus killed her. Everyone wanted to tame Pegasus but they were all unsuccessful.
Many British Virgin Island coins celebrating Royal occasions and Olympic equestrian events have featured horses on them. The latest coin is also released for the same country. The 31.103 g coin has no mintage limit and comes in a heat-sealed pack.
