2018-04-30 Mon
The sale of Proof 2018-W American Buffalo 1-ounce .9999 fine gold $50 coins would begin on 10th May. The coin has no mintage limit or household ordering restrictions and its pricing would be out one week before the sale. It would depend on the Mint’s pricing grid which is calculated by observing an average of prices over a week. There are chances that the coin would be priced at $1,710 initially. The coin was first issued in June 2006. The bullion version did not have a Mint mark while the Proof version had a W Mint mark. West Point Mint produced both the versions. In 2008, an Uncirculated 1-ounce version was introduced with the W Mint mark. 15,810 pieces of Proof 2017-W American Buffalo coins have been sold already. The coin had an opening retail price of $1,590.
The designs belonging to the Bison on Mound subtype are inspired by that of the Indian Head 5-cent coin by James Earle Fraser. Only some coins issued in 1913 featured this design. The remaining ones issued from 1913 to 1938 were based on the Bison on Plain reverse subtype. The latest coin, however, includes extra inscriptions.
