Nelson Mandela’s 100th Birth Anniversary to be Celebrated on New Banknotes

South Africa celebrated the 28th anniversary of the release from Victor Verster prison of Nelson Mandela on 11th February. South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is going to issue a set of commemorative banknotes to celebrate 100th Anniversary of the former president this year. Special banknotes of all denominations namely R10, R20, R50, R100, and R200 will be released. Apart from that, the South African Mint will also issue a new R5 circulation coin to celebrate the same occasion.

The new commemorative banknotes and coin will circulate along with the existing banknotes and coin. The new currency would be tentatively released on 18th July, the day when Mandela was born, 100 years ago. More information about the coins and banknotes will be shared closer to the release date. The current banknotes featuring Nelson Mandela were released in 2012.

Nelson Mandela is greatly responsible for the stable and prosperous economy of South Africa, which is why he deserves to be featured on National currency. South Africa’s first democratically elected President believed in servant leadership, peace and reconciliation. He has been an inspiration across continents. After Nelson Mandela’s release from prison on 11th February 1990, he walked into freedom at 4:22 pm on a country road. The event was witnessed by hundreds of cheering people.
