A congressional gold medal was presented to 94-year-old Bob Dole on 17th January in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. He was a Republican U.S. senator from Kansas who was defeated by Bill Clinton during the 1996 Presidential elections. 1.5-inch and 3-inch bronze versions of the gold medal can be purchased for $6.95 and $39.95 respectively.

The obverse features a portrait of Dole and the U.S. Capitol in the background. Other inscriptions include SON OF KANSAS ° SOLDIER ° STATESMAN. The reverse features a Kansas farm field with the inscription FOR / GREATNESS LIES NOT/ IN WHAT OFFICE YOU HOLD,/ BUT IN HOW HONEST YOU ARE, / IN HOW YOU FACE ADVERSITY,/AND IN YOUR WILLINGNESS / TO STAND FAST IN HARD/ PLACES. The quote is an excerpt from Dole’s acceptance speech that was delivered in August 1996 when he was nominated for Presidential elections.
