2018-01-16 Tue

Stack’s Bowers is going to offer the A.J. Vanderbilt Collection at the 2018 Whitman Coin & Collectibles Spring Expo in March. The collection comprises of several rare coins like the finest known R.L. Miles 1874-CC Liberty Seated dime and a Mint State 1795 Heraldic Eagle half eagle.

Many other rare coins will be offered at an auction for the first time after many decades. Amongst these is the MS-64 (PCGS) 1845 Liberty Head half eagle which is at the top of the Condition Census for the issue. It features vibrant yellow and honey-gold toning with prooflike surfaces. It also has well-frosted design elements with satiny and reflective fields.

The same coin was offered in October 1987, as a part of the Norweb Collection, Part I. The coin was graded MS-63 and described as “a prize specimen”. It was then offered in October 1999 as a part of the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part II when it was graded MS-64 by PCGS. There were two coins in the current grade and there were no finer examples.
