Just imagine a day without railways running in India! Can you even imagine the scenario? Hmm… let’s not give a thought to it. Millions of people travel by trains daily. Railways are the heart and soul of India. Did you know that India has one of the largest network railways in the world?Since the time the railways were introduced in India they are working day and night. And few of the railway stations have been the very evidence of the colonial rule in India. They are more than just railway stations and are known for their majestic architecture and gigantic beauty! Today we will discuss one such of our railway stations which is known for its architecture marvel.
Chhatrapati Shivaji MaharajTerminus (formerly known as Victoria Terminus) is located in the heart of Mumbai. It was designed by Frederick William Stevens in 1878. He was paid 25,000 US Dollar and it took almost 10 years for this magnificent building to complete. In 1888 the Victoria Terminus was finally completed and became a popular landmark of Bombay. It is designed in the High Victorian Gothic style of architecture. It was constructed using a high level of engineering both in terms of railway and civil engineering.
The CST station stands as an example of 19th century railway architectural marvels, for its advanced structural and technical solutions. It is one of the first and finest products that used industrial technology merged with the Gothic Revival style in India. The CST station was declared as ‘Heritage Grade 1’ under the resolution of Maharashtra State Government Act on 21st April 1997.
To commemorate this massive railway structure, India Post issued a commemorative stamp of INR 5 in 2009. It depicts the beautiful CST station. This is more than just a Railway station!
