Brian Brookes collection of St. Kitts-Nevis along with the Philatelic Collectors’ series of British Commonwealth and world stamps will be offered by the Spink auction from 23rd to 25th January.
The Brookes collection is put together over a period of 40 years. It includes a 1669 envelope mailed from Amsterdam to St. Christopher and a very scarce 1967 overprinted issues of Anguilla that were released after its independence and separation from St. Kitts-Nevis.
Another highlight is a 60¢ Anguilla issue. Out of the 100 known examples of this stamp, a mint example is offered with an estimate of £2,500 to £3,000. A single stamp has an officially listed value of $6,500. The Brookes collection auction also offers essays, die proofs and other important varieties.
Over 1,100 lots of single items as well as full collections are a part of the Philatelic Collectors’ series sale. A highlight of this collection is a margin strip of five 1866 6-anna purple Queen Victoria stamps of India with the tall green “postage” overprint. A segment of attached margin at left has the number “204” imprinted. It is a rare and the most important surviving mint example. The strip has an estimated value of £15,000 to £18,000. Another offering is a single unused example of the India 1866 6a purple with short green “postage” overprint.
