Nov 17 to Jan 18 – Major US Auctions!

2017-11-22 Wed

The Whitman Baltimore Expo was held from 9th to 12th November with auctions hosted by Stack’s Bowers Galleries. Heritage Auctions will conduct the 2017 Signature U.S. Coin auction in Dallas from 7th to 10th December. The Regency Sale XXIV will offer US coins by Legend Rare Coins Auctions in Las Vegas on 14th December. Heritage is going to organise multi-session official sales at the FUN convention in Tampa from 4th to 8th January. Online auctions will keep happening between these big events.

Part IX of the Eric P. Newman collection was offered by Heritage Auctions from 1st to 3rd November. Some of the coins offered in this sale were off the market for a long time. The sale made a total of $4.5 million.

One of the highlights was an eight-slot leather coin holder, made around 1920, that once held all five of the 1913 Liberty Head 5-cent coins. It was sold for $10,800. The set was purchased from the “Col.” E.H.R. Green estate by a partnership of Eric P. Newman and B.G. Johnson. One of the five 1913 Liberty 5-cent coins includes the George O. Walton example, graded Proof 63 by PCGS. It was believed that the coin was lost in a 1962 car crash. That example entered the market after 40 years and was sold at Heritage’s Central States Numismatic Society auction for $3,172,500 in 2013.
