The Royal couple - Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II is going to celebrate 70 years of their marriage in 2017. The Royal Mint is organising the Platinum Wedding Anniversary and releasing 11 different coins on this special occasion. 70 years back, on 20th November, the couple got married at Westminster Abbey in front of 2,000 guests. The event was also broadcast across 200 million radio listeners. Three original designs were created for the coin including two different portraits of the couple. The obverse features a new joint effigy of the couple.
One of the reverse design shows the couple on a horseback while the second reverse design pairs two shields to denote the heraldic lineage of both families. The first reverse design appears on four different £5 coins and one £20 coin. The double shield design graces the reverse of six different coins. Gold, silver, platinum and platinum piedfort coins are available in different denominations, purity, weights, and finishes.
