Regiment of Artillery observes 190th Gunners Day!

September 28th has a special place in the history of the Regiment of Artillery in India. It marks the raising of the first Indian Artillery unit, 5 (Bombay) Mountain Battery, on this momentous day in the year 1827.The first Indian Artillery Unit, 5 (Bombay) Mountain Battery inaugurated equipped with 2.5-inch RML Gun. The Ordnance RML 2.5 inch mountain gun was a British rifled muzzle-loading mountain gun designed to be broken down into four loads for carrying and was primarily used by the Indian Army under the British Raj.
Since its establishment, the Regiment has participated in the first Anglo-Afghan war which took place from 1839 to 1842. Thereafter the Regiment participated in both the World Wars and in all the wars post-independence. Artillery is the second biggest arm and has proved its mettle during the operations of 1947-48, 1962, 1965, 1971 and 1999. The valour of the Regiment of Artillery has won them 40 Honour Titles and 13 Unit Citations till date.
It is the honour the Regiment of producing some finest of officers in Indian Army out of which five of its illustrious generals were appointed as Chief of the Army Staff, including the present Chief, General Deepak Kapoor. Besides this, five gunner general officers have become Governors of various States.
India Post issued a 1 Rupee stamp commemorating the Golden Jubilee 1935 – 1985 of the prestigious artillery. Further another 1 Rupee commemorative stamp was issued in 1993 top celebrating the Golden Jubilee of 9 Parachute Field Regiment.
On the our 16th Independence anniversary, India Post issued two special postage stamps of 15 Naye Paise and 1 Rupee commemorating the valour of our Defence Forces.
