Persian Banknotes Offered by Spink

A collection of Persian paper money banknotes named The Shamshir and Lion Collection will be offered by Spink auctions on 27th of September in London. These beautiful banknotes have shades of pink and green featuring portraits of the Shahs, fine engraving and calligraphy. They are also the best of Bradbury Wilkinson and Waterlow & Sons. Individual examples have been sold before but a collection like this is offered for the first time. These higher denomination banknotes are big in size and are rarely auctioned.One of the highlights includes an Imperial Bank of Persia 50 tomans, Teheran, dated 1 June 1918, with serial number H/A 05315, coloured black, pink and green, featuring Shah Nasr-ed-Din. It is very fine and rare. Another star note is an Imperial Bank of Persia 100 tomans, Yezd, dated 18 June 1918, with serial number X/A 02549, featuring Shah Nasr-ed-Din. Only 100 such examples were unredeemed in the 20th Century.
Spink Auctions will also be offering Persian Coins from the Collection of His Excellency Ambassador Manoutcher Marzban in December. The collection contains gold coins and medals from the Safavid period till the Iranian Revolution of 1979.
