Kumar Gupta was one of the able rulers of Gupta dynasty who ruled from 415 to 455 CE. When it comes to coinage, he is one the most innovative and creative as he tried issuing coins of various types in gold, silver, and lead.In Gold, we come across Archer type, Horseman Type, Lion-Slayer, Tiger Slayer, Rhinoceros Slayer Type, Elephant Rider Type, Swordsman Type, Karttikeya Type, Apratigha Type and Lyrist Type.
In silver, he issued the Western and Madhyadesha type. The given image is one of the fine examples of Madhyadesha type of coins. It is a silver drachm weighing around 2.18 grams. The obverse of the coin depicts an intricate bust of the ruler with its fine facial features. The reverse of the coin has a fan tailed peacock and a Brahmi legend around ‘Vijitavaniravanipati Kumara Gupto Divam Jayati’ meaning “Having conquered the Earth and the lords of the Earth, Kumara Gupta wins the Heavens”. This amazing masterpiece was sold in the Classical Numismatic Gallery Auctions on 12 August 2017 for INR 13,500.
The silver and gold coins of Kumar Gupta are round in shape while the lead coins are square or rectangle.
