Madagascar Revamps its Banknotes

Madagascar released new 20,000-, 10,000-, 5,000-, and 2,000-ariary notes on 17th July. 1,000-, 500-, 200-, and 100-ariary notes will be released on 18th September. As of now, 3,000 ariary is equal to of $1 approximately.20,000-ariary banknote would be the highest denomination in Madagascar. Other new notes in the series replace notes of the same denomination that were issued in 2003 and 2004. The theme for the new series is “Madagascar and its Riches” like the earlier series. The designs highlight the nation’s economic activities, biodiversity, culture and tourism.
Older notes have been in circulation for more than 10 years now. New banknotes will feature the best and most reliable security features to curb counterfeiting activities and easily verify their authenticity.
Five iraimbilanja make one ariary. It is one of only two non-decimal currencies of the world today. The other non-decimal currency is the ouguiya of Mauretania which equals five khoums.
