The 2017 Law Enforcement Award of Excellence for Counterfeit Deterrence was given to the Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman, C Division (Quebec) by the Bank of Canada. This annual award was first introduced in 2004 to appreciate the work of criminal justice professionals and educators involved in eradicating bank note counterfeiting in Canada. The police department which won the award this year worked continuously for two years to catch hold of counterfeiters who were circulating fake $100 bank notes in Montréal, Quebec and Monteregie.
RCMP’s ICET investigators and other Quebec police forces worked hand-in-hand to execute three arrests. Four counterfeiting labs were busted and almost 4,200 counterfeit notes valued more than $400,000 CAD were seized. This gang of counterfeiters had approximately circulated 9,600 fake bank notes, laundering almost $1 million dollars in fake money.
