Stamp: A tiny piece of Art
2017-07-18 Tue
Collecting stamps is considered to be an educative hobby. They reflect every aspect of a nation’s life including its trade, history, arts, crafts, culture, etc.Well… But how many of you know about designing and production of stamps?
So today through this article we will shed light on this aspect of the stamp!
Designing postage stamps is a specialized branch of visual art and a lesser known form of applied art. Stamp designing is an area which needs special care and attention as stamps not only serve the purpose of transmitting mail but also fulfill other roles. The most important of these is spreading relevant messages to various parts of the world. This factor has made the art of postage stamp designing more challenging to graphic artists who have dedicated themselves to bringing out masterpieces on tiny pieces of paper which may gradually improve the standard of stamp designs. In philatelic designing, the design has to be confined to a two-dimensional tiny area in which the idea has to be conveyed as effectively and convincingly as possible.
This, of course, is not an easy task. The designer has to be very careful in choosing even basic symbols as these may be interpreted differently in different regions, as every place has its own cultural ethos. According to the great historian Anand Coomaraswamy, 'True symbols are those that leap to the mind without conscious effort'.
