1864 Small Motto 2-cent Piece Sold for $54,050

Stack Bower’s Whitman Expo took place from 22nd June to 25th June at the Baltimore Convention Centre. An 1864 Small Motto 2-cent piece, graded Proof 65 brown was sold for $54,050.The 2-cent denomination began in 1864, featuring the motto “In God We Trust” for the first time on a U.S. coin, and ended with the Proof-only coins that were released in 1873. Two sizes of the motto were used in 1864. The Small Motto subtype is rarer with the first T in TRUST closer to the ribbon crease at the left. This rare type also has a doubling to the word WE.
Experts believe that almost 20 to 30 Proof 1864 Small Motto 2-cent pieces exist. The offered coin is one of the finest.
