The Barn Owl Black Rhodium $20 Silver Canadian Coin
2017-07-06 Thu
The Royal Canadian Mint released its first ever coin with black rhodium plating – the 2017 Barn Owl $20 1oz Silver Coin. It is the first addition to its new series called Nocturnal by Nature. The matte proof finish and the rhodium plating create a contrast between the main animal motif and the background to replicate a night scene. The barn owl is nocturnal and has a sharp sense of hearing to hunt in complete darkness. It becomes active before the sun sets and can be seen flying from one location to the other in the morning.Rhodium has been used for decorative plating from early 19th century. Its demand increased in the 1970s after the catalytic converter technology was invented. Unlike other metals used in coinage, Rhodium does not get oxidised and does not react with other elements from the environment. The reverse design features the common effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
