Highlights of Heritage ANA Platinum Night Auctions

Heritage's Platinum Night auction will be offering a wide range of rare coins on 3rd August. The Golden Gate Collection of Roman Gold Aurei consists of 40 coins from the 60s to the 160s CE. The collection has an extremely rare aureus of Trajan's father, artistic Hadrian aurei, many good quality aurei of Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, Lucius Verus, and the two Faustinas.

Many interesting ancient Greek coins like two Syracuse decadrachms, an unrecorded gold stater of Magnesia in Ionia, Lydian electrum and gold coins, and 10 huge gold coins of Ptolemaic Egypt, are also offered. The Judaean section includes one of only four known silver quarter-shekel from Year Four of the Jewish War. Other 15 gold Roman pieces include a rare aureus of Didius Julianus.

Japanese proofs with the earliest dates (1870 to 1871) from the Meiji period are another unique offering at the auctions. A 20 yen piece, graded NGC PR66 Cameo in the first date produced is expected to break records.

An extremely rare set of silver medals from Russia during the reign of Nicholas I (1825-1855) commemorating the Crimean War, is something to look out for. One of the only four known 1933 "Lavrillier" pattern penny of George V is another major highlight. Large British gold coins offered include five guinea pieces from Charles II, James II, William & Mary, William III, Anne and George II, and five-pound coins from every king till George VI.
