The 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum and the 25th anniversary of the High Court Mabo decision was celebrated by Australia with the release of a special 50c circulating coin. Award-winning artist and granddaughter of Eddie Mabo, Boneta-Marie Mabo and the Royal Australian Mint joined hands for this new release.

After the historic Referendum of Indigenous land rights, First Australians were included in the Census. A Commonwealth along with a Constitutional role was given to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. The Mabo High Court case is a significant event for Australians indeed.

The coin features Eddie Mabo as representative of the High Court case, the Torres Strait Islander and Australian Aboriginal flags, and important pamphlets. Artist Boneta-Marie Mabo was extremely honoured to work on this project.
