The elephant holds a prominent place in the heritage and cultural traditions of Kerala. It is closely associated with the state’s temples, festivals and ceremonial traditions, most famously seen in grand temple processions where decorated elephants form an integral part of the spectacle. Beyond religious celebrations, the elephant has long been represented in Kerala’s art, literature and royal traditions, reflecting its association with strength, grandeur and prestige. This enduring cultural connection is also reflected in the region’s coinage, where the elephant appears as an important and recognizable motif.

The Travancore State, which occupied a substantial part of present-day southern Kerala, developed a distinctive monetary tradition incorporating symbols drawn from its religious and cultural milieu. Travancore coinage is particularly notable for the use of the conch shell, a symbol closely associated with Sri Padmanabha, the tutelary deity of the ruling royal family. Alongside the conch, other religious and royal symbols appeared on the state's diverse copper, silver and gold issues, creating a distinctive visual identity for Travancore's coinage.

Here, the Copper Thira Cash, weighs 1.93 grams features an elephant facing right on the obverse, with a crescent above. The elephant is the principal motif and gives the coin a distinctly regional character, while the crescent adds another symbolic element to the compact design.

The reverse displays a chakra positioned between conch shells. The chakra, or discus, is traditionally associated with Lord Vishnu, while the conch is an important Vaishnavite emblem. The combination of these symbols is especially significant in the context of Travancore, whose royal household maintained a close ritual association with Sri Padmanabha. The conch became one of the most recognisable symbols of Travancore and was prominently represented in the state's coinage and royal insignia.
