Jalal-Ud-din Muhammad Akbar was the third ruler of Mughal dynasty in India. He succeeded his father Humayun in the year 1556 AD and ruled until his death in 1605. He sat on the Mughal throne when he was just 13 years old. After defeating Hemu – a Hindu general of Sur dynasty – in the Second Battle of Panipat (1556), Akbar reacquired the Delhi throne and established the Mughal rule again.

Akbar issued two types of Coins Kalima and Ilahi (Non-Kalima). The Kalima coins which he issued have name and title of the king on the obverse and Kalima in the reverse. Ilahi coins which he issued has ilahi creed on the obverse and mint name, ilahi date and ilahi month on the reverse.

This Gold square tanka which weighs around 10.8g, minted in ‘Urdu Zafar Qarin’ was sold for INR 1, 51,000 at Todywalla Auction. The obverse of the coin is inscribed with name and title of the king with the mint name ‘Urdu Zafar Qarin’ written at the bottom; AH date Alif (in words) written on the second line. The reverse of the coin is inscribed ‘Kalima’ within rhombus and the name of four caliphs written in the margin.
