Rare Key Proof 1895 Morgan dollars are the only silver dollars struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1895. Three of them were offered at Heritage’s Central States Numismatic Society U.S. coin auctions in Schaumburg, Ill from 26th to 30th April. A Proof 63 dollar sold for $54,050, a Proof 64 Cameo was sold for $58,750 and a Proof 67 Deep Cameo was sold for $199,750.No 1895 Morgan dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint for circulation which is why only 880 examples of Proof coins exist today. The coins offered at the auction feature fine definition and mirrored fields.
An 1896 dollar graded Proof 69 Ultra Cameo was also offered. This coin has a mintage limit of 762. But there are millions of Philadelphia Mint 1896 circulation strikes making Proof coins of this year a “type coin”.
The Proof 1896 Morgan dollars have strong cameo contrast, with frosty devices and feature mirrored fields. All the coins were struck using two die pairs. The offered coin was mind blowing apart from a small planchet lamination on the reverse. No wonder why it was sold for a whopping $82,250.
